Music for Head Start

Made possible by the generous support of

In January, February and March 2015, more than 850 Stark County Head Start preschool children will enjoy SymphonyLand programs in the comfort and familiarity of their classrooms at sites in Canton, Alliance and Massillon. SymphonyLand is a series of trio performances by CSO musicians designed to introduce our youngest audience to three of the four traditional orchestra instrument families - string, woodwind and brass - through a foundation of colorful, engaging children’s literature.  Three different books, enhanced by carefully scripted narration and supported by musical excerpts from traditional symphonic literature, introduce children to Ohio Learning Standards in Reading/Language Arts, Social Studies and Music for Preschool – Grade One.  Once introduced, the music concepts of high/low; fast/slow; loud/soft; steady beat; orchestra instruments are addressed and reiterated at each performance.

For Head Start children, the Kinder Concert in April 2015 will bring together the instrument families introduced at the on-site performances in a larger full orchestra setting.  Kinder Concerts, a Canton Symphony tradition for more than 30 years, enable children to experience the concert environment and the additional opportunities for learning that attending a concert provides (rules for riding the bus, concert etiquette, audience behavior, etc.).  Performances of Kinder Concerts take place in the Great Court of the Cultural Center for the Arts in downtown Canton and performances will be scheduled to accommodate the Head Start audience.
