Rachel L. Waddell
Dr. Rachel L. Waddell is quickly gaining notoriety as an inspiring and versatile conductor and educator, both on and off the podium. She serves as the Associate Conductor of the Canton Symphony Orchestra (Ohio) and the Music Director of the Canton Youth Symphonies. Cleveland Classical has described Waddell’s performances with the CSO as “breathtaking”, “powerful,” and “impassioned.” During the 2015-16 season she became the first woman to guest conduct Cleveland’s Suburban Symphony Orchestra. Demonstrating her affinity for voice and the operatic stage, Waddell also held the interim position of Director of Choral Activities at Kent State University, Stark.
In her role as the CSO’s Associate Conductor under Music Director Gerhardt Zimmermann, Waddell conducts the orchestra’s pops and educational programs, and guest conducts on MasterWorks performances. In April 2016, she conducted the Ohio premier of Christopher Theofanidis’ Dreamtime Ancestors with the CSO. In addition Waddell serves as Music Director of the award-winning Canton Youth Symphonies, which was named 2015 Youth Orchestra of the Year by Los Angeles’ Classics Alive. The youth orchestras received a scholarship and residency with internationally renowned violinist, Lindsay Deutsch. In recognition of Waddell’s accomplishments with the orchestras and community, she was named a 2015 Twenty Under 40! recipient by the Canton Repository and the Canton Chamber of Commerce.
Last season Waddell served as the conductor of Oberlin Conservatory’s Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra Philharmonia. Additional appointments include Apprentice Conductor of the Las Vegas Philharmonic, Associate Conductor of the Las Vegas Civic Orchestra, Music Director of the Las Vegas Korean Youth Orchestra, and many others. She has attended the Oberlin Conservatory Summer Conductors’ Institute, Bard College Conservatory Summer Conducting Workshop, and the Rose City International Conducting Workshop in Portland, Oregon. She has worked with conductors Gerhardt Zimmermann, Taras Krysa, Christopher Zimmerman, Harold Farberman, Apo Hsu, David Loebel, and others
Waddell holds a Bachelor of Music in Composition and Vocal Performance from the Hartt School of Music in Connecticut, a Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting from Northern Arizona University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
