The Canton Youth Symphony was founded in 1961 as a way to give young musicians
the opportunity to participate in an advanced orchestra that strives to provide a
professional atmosphere for music making and the highest artistic standards.
Membership in the Canton Youth Orchestra offers musicians:
- Opportunity to play with students from a variety of area schools (18 schools from 12 different school districts were represented in the 2011-2012 season)
- Opportunity to perform a repertoire of challenging and varied orchestral music
- Opportunity to study with Canton Symphony Orchestra musicians through sectionals and/or to play a side-by-side concert with the Canton Symphony
- Opportunity for members who are juniors or seniors in high school to participate in a concerto competition adjudicated by Gerhardt Zimmermann, music director of the Canton Symphony Orchestra
Membership in the Canton Youth Symphony is by audition only. Click here for more audition information.
The Canton Youth Symphony is primarily intended for students in high school and junior high. However, there is no minimum age requirement and talented younger musicians are encouraged to audition.
School Music Program Requirement
In support of school music programs, it is the policy of the Canton Youth Symphony that members are required to also participate in at least one school instrumental ensemble (if one is available). Extenuating circumstances will only be considered on a case by case basis and must be discussed with the Director of Education and Community Engagement (330-452-3434 ext. 604).
Rehearsals & Performances
Canton Youth Symphony rehearses from September through May on Wednesday evenings from 6:00-8:45pm in the Arts in Stark Education Center, 1014 Cleveland Avenue, NW, Canton.
