The Canton Symphony Orchestra announces the following vacancy beginning in the 2017-2018 season


(approx. 50 services per season)

along with possible unconducted

Ensemble services (String Quartet, etc.)

Qualifications for this position will include but not be limited to:  perform all solo first violin orchestral passages and ensemble first violin passages, bow all first violin parts, set an example of the very best musicianship for all the sections and function in the manner consistent with professional musicians.

Auditions will be held Sunday, September 17, 2017 from 11:20am - 1:30pm at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Studio 217, 11021 East Blvd., Cleveland, OH 44106.  Preliminary auditions will be held from 11:20am - 12:30pm, with the final round beginning immediately after.

Per service rate for the Concertmaster position is $207.98, plus 5% pension contributions (AFM-EPF) for the 2017-18 season.  Per service rate for the first daily Ensemble service (up to 1 hour period) is $85.00 for the 2017-18 season.  Some services require daytime availability.

Repertoire for the audition includes a solo work of choice (one movement), plus the following excerpts:

Rimsky-Korsakov  Scheherazade - all solos

Strauss                  Ein Heldenleben - all solos

Also, prepare the following first violin parts:

Beethoven     Symphony No. 9 – Adagio m. 99 - 115

Brahms         Symphony No. 2 - 1st mvmt.

Mozart          Symphony No. 39 - 4th mvmt. 1st 40m.

Schumann     Symphony No. 2 - Scherzo

Strauss         Don Juan – 1st page

Please bring your own music to the auditions - no excerpts will be available at the auditions.  Finalists might be asked to sight-read.
